I always think it's funny to hear people talking about the so-called paleo diet. That's because our ancestors would surely have preferred to eat easily available and delicious protein-rich insects instead of wasting days and burning up energy hunting big game. One traditional such protein source is the mopani worm. In addition to being fat and easily collectible, they are also protein/rich and very mild tasting. They are crunchy and chewy at the same time, almost as if eating a piece of slightly dried shrimp that still had a bit of its shell. The larger ones are about the size of a small piece of shrimp. We had the chance to eat them for dinner tonight along with some other traditional Shangaan food. Most of us tried eating them. A few didn't or couldn't try them, but I was impressed by how many if us did. Sometimes these worms are smoked, and other times they're pan-fried in oil. We had the pan fried ones.
I'm posting every mopani worm photo I have, although I didn't get to take photos of everyone as they ate.
